The 5 Must Have Pieces Of Winter 2020
With the long, hazy days of summer passing us by quickly and propelling us right into fall, it may seem like the once-far-away winter season is now just around the corner. As we move from summer to fall and winter, it's time to jazz up your wardrobe. From classic outerwear to fun, funky prints, here are five must-have items for this year's winter season.
Long coats are looking supreme
Previous seasons were all about sportswear, but that's now on its way out. Coats are going back to straight, long and classic shapes for winter 2020. Think coats that will envelop you from your neck down to your toes in extreme elegance. While some people are going for long coats in the most classic of versions — wool in solid fall colors — don't forget there is some room for a little daring here. Emphasized sleeves and collars and more vibrant prints are out there, as well as some versions that play a bit with asymmetry yet still have long length or a belt for accentuating your waist.
Functionality is always a concern with winter coats, so make sure you're sticking with a fabric that can handle the weather you'll be in. Or, if the mood strikes you, get two or more coats in different fabrics so you have what you need when you need it.
Checked print is coming back
A staple of the 1950s and part of the 1960s, checked print is poised to make a huge comeback this year. Expect to see this print in a variety of forms, from mini versions in the classic style to bold maxi forms, ultra bright and even completely de-constructed for the most avant-garde among us. It's going to be up to you how you decide to incorporate this staple winter print into your wardrobe. You can go with handful of light touches or go fully checked to stand out and express yourself.
While checked prints can be easy to overdo, there is enough variety out there to help you avoid looking like a tablecloth. If all else fails and you just can't commit to a larger checked piece, a bag or scarf with a neutral pattern will fit the bill.
Find time for fringe
You're probably used to associating fringe with the summertime, and it's been a staple of big, open-air festivals such as Coachella. This winter, however, you're going to see fringe everywhere you look. From accessories and jackets to skirts and pants, sidestepping fringe is not going to be an easy task.
Of course, it is worth trying to be careful here. Fringe is something you can easily overdo, so stick to a light touch here so you don't end up looking like you're ready to go to a rodeo in the 1980s. As with checked prints, a bag or scarf with fringe can be a safe way to add a bit of this hot style to your look without going too far.
Red is revving up
This summer was all about pink and yellow, but red is going to be the centerpiece of a cutting-edge winter wardrobe this year. A symbol of passion, red hues can brighten your look regardless of your style and how you wear it. Go with light red touches, such as red accessories, or make a bold head-to-toe statement.
Red was on the runway for just about all the major fashion brands during their Fall-Winter presentations, and we're now seeing red work its way into the stores in a wide variety of pieces and accessories. This winter seems to be about boldness, and red is certainly that.
The big bags have it
Great news for those of us who always appreciated how much Mom could fit into her purse but would not be caught dead with one of our own: big bags are really in. The small mini-clutches of last season are being put aside for more oversized accessories. Carried on the end of your arm or your shoulder, we're seeing very large winter bags in many shapes — including satchels, totes and bucket bags — and in a wide range of materials to suit any look.
If you haven't changed your wardrobe much in previous winter seasons, now is the time to do so. With so many trend shifts this winter, it's high time to treat yourself to some of the must-haves for the season so you can look and feel as if you just stepped off of the runway.
